Developing an attitude of gratitude at work

Published on 20th November 2023 under Blog Topic - Professionals/Career Movers,

Did you know there is an intimate connection between a practice of gratitude and increased joy?

One can’t exist without the other. But isn’t it amazing how quickly our excitement and happiness for our new job can turn to complacency?

I’m not talking about fake positivity in a poor work environment or pretending all is okay in a toxic work situation. But rather, how quickly we take the good stuff, the ordinary good stuff for granted.

Here are some of the many ways we enjoy our work. Most are the little things and because they are little moments, we can overlook them.

Let’s look at some examples and then some gratitude practices that will help elevate your career/job satisfaction and joy.

  • Free parking, short commute, work from home options, a trusting manager, training opportunities, subsidised healthcare, pension contributions, social clubs, corporate social responsibility activities, supportive work team, an undisturbed cup of coffee, a lunchtime catch-up, getting your 10,000 steps in, connecting with customers, solving a problem, sharing a joke/funny story, hearing ‘good job’, a surprise thank you!

Our lives are made up of the ordinary. When we recognise the positive, life-affirming, ‘normal’ everyday stuff, it raises our sense of satisfaction and contentment. With this kind of energy, we are happier co-workers, managers and team players. As a team, we can overcome adversity more effectively and develop happier workplaces.

Here are two ways to foster a habit of gratitude in the workplace:

1. Team Debriefs – give some time to share one thing you are grateful for. It’s a great way to understand your fellow teammates’ priorities and values.

2. Create a grateful ‘shout out’ board – every time a member of staff goes the extra mile for you or you witness something you are grateful for. Post your message on the board.

Would love to hear what you’re grateful for in your job?!
